JONATHAN STONE
From Imagining to Managing
JOLLY (2018)
JOLLY was a performance I made in March 2018 at the October Gallery.about my diagnosis wiith Ataxia (SCA17), a ‘degenerative neurological condition for which there is 'no known cure’, I was told.. Getting the diagnosis scared the life out of me! It included story telling, my own siongs and one by Jack Klaff who also helped me put the show together, encouraged me, directed me. I was very low at the time.
JOLLY was a performance about my diagnosis, my disrupted sense of balance, and co-ordination. In JOLLY, through story telling performing and song, I tell the story of my fears and acceptance of my condition and how to be er jolly in a scary place.

JOLLY was also about my walking stick
- medical prop or theatrical prop?
JOLLY was also about visible and invisible ‘disability’.
JOLLY was also about the thin line between fact and fiction.
JOLLY was performed in front of an invited audience of people who knew me and supported me. I found this very moving.
