JONATHAN STONE
From Imagining to Managing
The First Solo Performance of Beethoven's 9th Symphony
was a solo performance I made for Battersea Arts Centre in 2004 based on the idea of reducing that massive piece to a single tune, hummed or played on little instrument.
Beethoven's 9th is often regarded as grandiose and over the top, but imagine it as an earworm occurring to a man losing his hearing, in a beseiged Vienna with gunfire all around him. A performance of narration, humming, muttering, and mandolin.
